What problem did you identify?
My problem was simple where to go out in leeds. From my own experience i have found that leeds can be an overwhelming place at the best of times especially when you've just arrived and you don't know whats what. So my idea was put to provide a good night out and to me thats the otley run. Its a great social event and also a good chance to sample leeds night life. To do this I have made a student package that contains guides and useful student products such as a free bag posters etc. The main product of course being an otley t-shirt.
What evidence did you find to support your decisions?
I found out peoples favourite nights out and the otley run featured highest. I researched all the pubs individually from experience to peoples accounts to get a feel for each this enabled me to make my otley guide. I also researched into the sort of what people felt was missing as regards information about leeds. i used the internet to map out the routes. and also researched the sort of t-shirts people responded to the best so what kind of pattern colour etc.
What methods did you use to gather your evidence and what forms did it take?
Primary research- This was based on my own personal experience of the pubs along the stretch taking into account price an atmosphere etc.
Quantitative research- I identified peoples three main problems the encountered when the arrived in leeds, i then took this information and applied the same process to social life by asking them there 3 main problems regarding going out and more so what they found was missing.
Secondary Research- This consisted of websites associated with the otley run and looking at similar products such as carnage t-shirts etc.
What methods of research did you find useful and why and how did these inform your response to your problem?
I found looking at similar product very useful i was able to look at what had been before and take from them what i liked and felt was working and on they other hand what didn't. I also found talking to people who had personal experience of my problem and similar problems the most useful to gain an idea of where i needed to be.
What research could you have carried out that would have proved more useful?
I wish i had looked into branding i felt my final project was a little bitty i had used too many visual and really needed to pin down my project. This i think wold have given my project more visual consistency and ultimately make the whole package more sellable.
Five things I have learnt about the design process over the last five weeks.
1. That your product is only as good as your research.
2. To make prototypes of everything this would improve the quality of final products.
3. To not get carried away with your product and to step back and ask myself is this working.
4. To book more printing time.
5. To record the design process using photography.
Five things I would do differently next time.
1. Give more time to making sketch pads an journals.
2. Turn a minute into 2.
3. To be more clear and concise in crit as to what my product is.
4. To start the making process earlier this i will ensure in the future I didn't really enjoy the hectic finish this time.
5. Lots more research.
