Before we started the brief there was a lot of aspects about the whole module that daunted me for example the whole idea of sums and how much things cost, but more so the reality that faces a designer in the real world. What I did find however that with enough knowledge and guidance these things are a lot more achievable and are in fact everyday mundane actions undertaken by countless business people and entrepreneurs across the world. It is true the more you know the easier something gets. At the beginning the thought of the presentation scared the life out of most people but with the set of lecture and individual tasks the information was easily absorbed.
I found the whole module an eyeopener and I would like to think it will guide me in my future practice if this be in business or basic employment. One thing I have learned is that you cant just do as you wish you have to be able to communicate and compromise with other people this is also true to the business you establish, it cannot simply supply to one area of design one client base if you want to be successful you have to be flexible in the work you do. This leads me into individual strengths I feel that this module had more than any underpinned what it is I have to offer to the creative industries and how my skills can compliment a group of designers.
One of the most useful sections of the module for me was the initial cost of living this really brought it home how much things cost and the amount of equipltment resources need to be purchased before starting a business can even begin. More than anything the amount of money that needs to be earned before a personal wage can be taken, working out the daily and hourly rate really put a lot into perspective and more than anything gave an Idea of the amount of jobs that need completion on a week to week basis to achieve this, some idea of the work load I'm letting myself in for.
Moving on to the groups I enjoyed working together on this brief I felt we all brought individual abilities to the table I felt I gave forward a lot of design ideas and contributed in the direction of the company. Things that I was not so good at throughout the whole module was mostly time management, I have focused to much this year on the design and not so much the more information heavy modules around the edges. I regret not doing tasks promptly after the respective lectures, if I had done this key information would have been easily absorbed and ultimately my understanding much greater. This would in turn have informed my design solutions improving my overall practice.
Another aspect that I could improve on was presenting and more so being concise and hitting key points this is just my individual performance. I believe this is something I need to build on perhaps better rehearsal and preparation is needed. In all I believe this is something that will improve over time no doubt, the key thing is that as a group we hit the main points and delivered our pitch successfully.
In the end this module has been a great help I have learned a lot along the way and it has successfully informed other areas of my design practice as well as running successfully alongside my ppd.
