What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
I think the main skill i have developed is the art of research and categorising although i don't believe i have entirely mastered this i have a greater appreciation for the topic i realise a well researched product is a good product. The biggest lesson is lesson in time i have realised that it is necessary to use time efficiently for the next module i intend to be more on top of my work load so as to have a comfortable finish. I have learned a lot about the art of book making and more so from the mistakes i have made. The main skill i have learned is in my discovery of illustration this has been via my own discovery.
What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
I have learned that there is more depth to research than i previously anticipated, in the simple fact that there is such forms as quantitative and secondary. I collected vast quantities of research and the categorisation of it provided me with the ability to reinvent my ideas, and consequently allowed me to justify my key decisions. An example of this is when i was designing more Christmas scenes my job was made easier by looking back at previous objects and using them within my new designs. Also when deciding what colours to use i could look back on my original categories to inform me.
What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I have identified a skill in my illustration as i have never designed a children's book and have enjoyed the process and development.
What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?
I feel my main weakness is my research I could have put a lot more effort in the process. I believe my work is of a good standard although I could have finished certain aspects of it off to a higher quality. I also think that I need to give greater thought to the materials I use in my final design I will plan such processes out better next time, such as leaving a boarder of space around the edges of my book pages so i don't lose any details when the book is cut to size. Considering all the above I feel these experiences will put me in greater stead in the future and will act as a learning curve.
Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
1. I will try not to get too tied up in my idea i feel at times throughout the design process i have been too single minded. I definitely need to step back on occasion and ask myself the question does my product have a purpose and function.
2.Be spot on with my time management although i do not feel mine is the worst I believe i need to improve to make my workload more manageable at the end.
3 .I will think a lot more into the process of making my product instead of obsessing about the layout and design.
4. Spend at least a couple of hours on sketchbooks and journals every week this will allow me to focus more on the submission instead of backtracking to remember my thoughts.
5. To generate more ideas and be less ridged sticking to one.
Are there any things we could have done differently that would have benefitted your progress?
Not really no.
How would you grade yourself in the following areas?
(5 = excellent, 1 = poor)
Attendance 4
Punctuality 4
Motivation 5
Commitment 5
Quantity of work produced 5
Quality of work produced 4
Contribution to the group 5
